At first it will work great, but wood is constantly changing, warping, and moving. This change in wood causes you to have a gate with a short life span. We use welded pipe frames with hinges that attach directly to the pole. Additionally, we go the extra mile by installing a heavier (thicker) post that sits 3’ in the ground instead of the typical 2’ used by most.
